The Desert Biome

Today's study is on the Desert Biome. You can use your book to read about the Desert.

Deserts are large, sandy ecosystems. They don't get much rain at all, some deserts have never gotten rain in centuries. The Atacama Desert gets rain almost every 10 years. Other deserts get rainfall at least every 5 months. People, animals, and plants in the desert have to be ready to live with little water. Some animals might drink the blood of other animals to get nutrients.

The Desert plant to the left is called a cactus, or plural, cacti. Cacti store water in their stems and save it for droughts and little rain. Some animals try to burrow in cacti to get water. That is why cacti have prickly spines. It will hurt if you touch one.

Desert dwellers include people. People who live in Deserts are called nomads. Most nomads are settled in towns, but some still roam. Nomads use camels to get from place to place, and set up tents at night.

All entries for the Biome Contest are due May 23. Use this information if you chose to enter with a desert biome and animal.
